15.04.2021 STATEMENT
On 14 April 2021, Arman Tatoyan, the RA Human Rights Defender announced that Ani Gevorgyan, a journalist from the website Tert.am, had applied to him informing that she had received threats in different social media in connection with the performance by her of her professional journalistic activities. In particular, several users had disseminated a photo of her and her child along with insulting and degrading texts.

On March 26 Media Defence filed a case at the Strasbourg court on behalf of four Armenian citizens following the bombing of the town of Martuni by Azerbaijani forces during the recent armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. The applicants - three journalists who were injured and the brother of a journalist fixer who was killed - allege that as a result of this attack their rights under the European Convention on Human Rights were violated by Azerbaijan. On March 30 Media Center online discussion was on this topic. Armenian lawyer and president of the Freedom of Information Centre Shushan Doydoyan and Media Defence Legal Director Padraig Hughes and Media Defence Senior Legal Officer Carlos Gai presented the case and talk about the security of media professionals working in conflict zones.
30.03.2021 Armenian legislation draws criticism from press advocates
New Armenian legislation that would impose crippling penalties for insult and defamation is coming under criticism from local and international press freedom advocates, who are urging the president not to sign it into law. The law would triple the existing penalties for “insult” and defamation to three million drams ($5,700) and six million ($11,400), respectively. Armenia’s parliament passed the legislation on March 24 on a 76-40 vote. The two opposition parties opposed the legislation.
